Yellow jacket nest encasing a bicycle pump

Photos by Steve Deaver, taken near Sonora Pass.

This is a yellow jacket nest that was inside a dark shed. The wasps were entering from the exterior, through a crack. The nest, as you cans see, had the standard hole at the bottom, but it was the wall connection that served as the primary entry for the yellow jackets. The yellow jacket nest was built over, and encased, part of a bicycle pump.

In this image, you can more clearly see the encasement of the bicycle pump handle by the wasp nest. Photo by Ray Powers, Wagner Track, near Dardanelles area, Tuolumne County, Ca. 13 September 2016.
